I am looking at a diesel David Brown 995 for my first tractor. It has a loader, and everything seems to work, but was wondering if anyone had any comments, or things to look for?

Toughest worker, best on fuel you'll ever find. as others have pointed out, you will need a manual to figure out how to use the hydraulics. the hydraulics WILL give problems if no kept absolutely clean. i have two 990's and one 880. i use them all actively on a cattle/hay farm.

Those Davies are as tough as nails and seem to go on forever. The only thing I've seen up here, is they tend to crack blocks. But braise or silver solder them and they just keep on keepin' on.

the DB I used to run was a fine tractor, but very hard on the ears - not so much the exhaust, more so a hellish lot of mechanical noise, But is was reliable and powerful.

Just be sure to run it at working rpm and see if you can stand the sound, you may need to wear those hearing protectors.

There was an active Case/ DB dealer in our town in the 70's (long since gone, of course)- he sold a ton of DB's to local dairymen. Most of them are beat clear to death by now (rode hard and never put away- just rode hard some more)- but they still are running. Seem to be one tough tractor.

i have one and i love it,also have 1210db.the thing about david browns is most people dont understand the hydraulics systems, thay most stay clean, have boots on shifters.as with any tractor if serviced should last long time.getting on the 995 is tough but once on will work all day long. parts can be had but a little pricey like jd.

I don't have any idea about parts availability or cost but the David Browns were good dependable tractors. My neighbor ran a dairy and had two of them for years. They were used and abused and never gave him any serious problems. I'm pretty sure one of them was a 995. I bush hogged most of one summer on one and it was a lot smoother and more comfortable than my old IH 444.

I forgot to ask what most of you think would be a fair price for a david brown 995 in fair condition, with quik-tach loader?

Say anywhere from $5000-$7000 depending on condition and local market.

Good solid tractors, VERY! easy on fuel.

Cons: electrical system is a PIA, every seal and gasket will weep, and when you need to repair something everything is behind something else. Parts are getting a little pricey and hard to come-by.

My personal opinion: If your legs are working, walk/run away as fast as you can.

Dick, what kind of problems have you seen with them?

The dealers hated to take them in because they were "dead merchandise". I've seen quite a few parked in boneyards and fence corners, but not sure what did them in.

Any particular reason(s) for your response? What sorts of things were those tractors known to be bad for?
