oil for nuffield

i have a nuffield dm4 that needs oil in the gearbox.

is the oil in the box used for the pto or is it seperate and what would be the best to use.

gearbox , axle and hydraulics all use the same oil . Use universal oil as nowadays there is no need for a heavy gear oil (oils have improved and your tractor is not ploughing 12 hours a day )

i would think then that sa30 or sa50 caterpillar transmission and drive train oil would be ok or does it need to be thicker

the lighter oil is fine, and much easier on the hydraulics , i use what we call universal oil which also goes in the engine , the nuffield also has a gap between the engine and the gearbox so gets no engine heat ,unless you do very heavy work in a very hot climate the modern viscostatic oils are much more stable so don't need to be so thick
