I have a JD 5420 with a front loader with 500 hours on the rig. When going up, the loader goes quickly but jerky. Has full fluid and a new filter. Any ideas on what I could check? Could a dirty screen do this? Many thanks, Tomas

I was "told" it was Hy-Gard. Maybe I should start over again, as the change was made at a Ford dealer.

I have a Yanmar 240D (hey guys it's green and old) I had a similar problem chatter and jerking only slow. The knob under the seat for the 3pt hitch was turned off soon as I opened it, the loader works fine. According to the book I have to find netural in the control leaver for the 3pt hitch and set the feed back rod. If This the Problem I could e-mail you a copy of the page.

No, I changed the filter to try and correct it. The power steering also is jerky below about 1800 rpm's. I'll try to check for a rack or bind situation. Thanks for your ideas.

Has it always done it? Or did it start after changeing to that new filter? Air in the system will cause what you are describeing too.

Robert

It is more likely a mechanical bind in the loader, like misalignment, a bent cylinder rod, one cylinder better than the other and out pushing.

The hyd press is equal throughout, so if there is a bind, the lift slows and the pressure rises overcoming the resistance with a jerk.

My loader is old, the left lift cylinder is better than the right which also has a slightly bent rod. With bucket mt, the left cylinder leads the right causing small but noticeable jerks when lifting.
