Re: brake fluid for jack oil. NO! It will probably eat seal in jack piston-unsafe. Jack oil about like 10w non-detergent oil, brake fluid glycol-more like alcahol solvent. most seals/Orings not compatible- will leak if wrong fluid used. RN

I've used auto-trany fluid for years, never a problem. But, as Bob said, hyd jack oil isn't that much more, either.

Hydraulic jack oil is easy to obtain. Why risk using the wrong oil in a device where you could be injured, if a seal failed and the jack dropped suddenly?

Some times doing a emergency repair in the middle of a busy season, and you find out your jack doesn't work because of the lack of oil, it would be nice to save a couple of hours, by using a good subsiitute. In my case time is money, and I most always use safety blocks, Stan

You should never put yourself in a position where that can happen. You just need to think safety and work appropriately. Even with the correct oil, a freak failure could cause your death.
