Hey guys,
I nedd a little expert electrical advice. I just bought a 1969 4020D. Today was the first day I was going to use it. I had put two new 12 volt batteries on it about two weeks ago. I got on it to start it to roll some hay and it was dead. I then attempted to jump start it. It was at this point I noticed a wire smoking from the alternator. I took the jumper cables off and beat out the fire. the smoke was coming from a small wire that had burnt in two going to the alternator. This wire was connected on the other end to two baterry cables bolted together. this whole mess was duck taped. These cables went back under the steering wheel area. I noticed only one battery had an actual ground. The other ground appeared to be one of these wires going toward the alternator. I haven't totally disassembled the mess yet. Does this sound like this is wired right? I don't know. Someone please point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Devin

I agree with brokenwrench
want to add if you have to keep the two 12 volt batteries then you can change the battery wiring from series to parrell and keep the tractor at 12 volts. each battery would need to be grounded seperatly and the positive terminals connected together at one terminal. terminal could be battery or starter or another junction point.
you can get a battery termanal from McMaster Carr that accepts two wires and fits on the battery. Any shop that works on large trucks should be able to make cables or point you to the right place
Good luck
Ron

Your 4020 is a 12 Volt tractor. You need 2 6 volt batteries hooked in series. One positive going to the starter, the negative on that battery going to the positive on the other battery, and that battery's negative to ground. The way you wired with 2 12 Volts possibly gave you 24 volts, and there is a good possibility that you have fried the alternator, fuel gage and indicator lights, and the fuel solenoid on the injection pump, unless the circuit breakers kicked out.You need to get a wiring diagram and sort out your battery cables and alternator wiring before further damage is done.
