i am in the market to buy my first tractor (used). can someone give me some general advice about which make/model tractors i should look for and which i should shy away from. i'd like something dependable with parts readily available. i need a front loader, pto, and 3 pt hitch; around 25 to 30 hp. i can afford something in the $5,000-$7,000 ballpark. thanks for any advice.

The best tractor you can get in the 35-40 HP range is the Massey 135. And this is coming from a Deere dude. In the ~30 HP range, the Deere 420/430 two cylinder, Ford Jubilee series, Ferguson TO-30 or 35, or a Case 430 would all be good choices depending on what you can find. If you can find a Deere 820 (later series three cylinder) or 1020 those would be good choices. There are a lot of 8N Fords out there. They are tough enough but they don't have live hydraulics or PTO and some of them tend to be high priced for the amount of tractor you get. For a bigger size, the best in the 50 Hp range is the Massey 165 and in the 65-70 HP range is the Ford 5000 at 67 HP. Good luck and happy hunting. A lot of the fun is in the looking.

I'd have to agree with Ben. Any of those he mentioned should do you fine for a long while. My first tractor was a MF35 Diesel. It's a very good small yet strong machine. Low center of gravity compared to many. Plenty of power. The MF35s have Live PTO and a very good 3-pt. For the size the MF35 or MF135 has good visuals from the seat so you can get in close. Both are pretty straight forward on any repair work you may want or need to do and AGCO Dealers are getting to be just about everywhere so any parts you may need shouldn't be any more than a day out. As Ben mentioned, the Ford 3000/4000 or 5000 would not be a bad choice, I'm just a bit partial to Massey's. Personally, I think the Massey's hold up better than the Fords. There's nothing wrong with the Case tractors that I know of, Other than operating one now and again, I haven't had much experience with them. Good Luck with whatever you end up getting.

Aaron, We could use a few specifics like what will you being wanting to do with the tractor? Do you have the time to restore an older one ? Will you be working hillsides or is the ground level? Trees and brush to clear? What sort of crop is planned?

good questions. the ground is level. i need to till about an acre every so often and then mow about three acres more often. i will also use it to haul things around the farm, load my truck with debris, gravel, and dirt. thank you.

Stay away from the new jap tractors.

Id say a MF 135. Handy with a loader, fairly small, and its 47hp - Its nice to know that youve got that extra power there if you need it.

Perkins 3 cylinder diesel is by far the better engine.

Also MF35. Fergie to30, but not very good with a loader,Ford 3000/4000/5000, Fordson Major if you want something cheap, but parts arent easy to get hold of.

Im not a deere man, but im sure thell give you some alternatives from that brand.

Try to keep within the makes MF, JD, IH, Ford. INHO they are the best brands.

But im a massey man.
