I agree with Nb. Cowman. If it is scored or pitted, you are wasting your time. With hydraulic systems, wherever oil leaks out, dirt leaks in. Be a shame to mess up the hyd. system for the cost of a $50.00 ram at Farm and fleet.
If it's a "special" ram, best to take it to a hyd. shop, have them "true" it and rechrome. It will be like new. Regards, Larry

Here's a trick I've used often to polish various metals... get hold of a heavy piece of leather, cut a 3 to 4 inch flat round out of it and attach it to a drill arbor. Polish away! Use the steel wool mentioned to take off the rust first though. But that leather will make 'er shine like new! I've used it on everything from bumpers to jewelry (made up a little one for my Dremel).

Ron, I like that idea, plus it will give me a good use for my worn out boots.

The safest way I can think of would be to use steel wool, size 4-0. I have done this on an older cylinder I have, the ram shined up pretty good, I haven't been able to test it because I can't locate any new packing for it.

I can't work without the wire wheel on the bench grinder but if you are talking about the shaft that goes in and out it must be perfectly shiny or you will never keep seals in it.
