A couple days ago here in St. Louis I saw someone bar tow a ford tractor with his pickup truck. I have never seen that done before. I would never imagine trying to do it on the highway. This guy was going 50-60 miles per hour! I'm guessing the tractor was in the 50-75 hp class, it was blue and white, but it went bye so fast I didn't get a good look at anything but the back tires going really fast. Seems awful dangerous to me.

I saw one better than that. I went to an auction a few weeks ago and saw a guy put the front end of a John Deere B in the bed of his pickup and had the rear wheels rolling on the road. I had a witness to this and we laughed all the way home.

I still dont know how it happened but one of my friends was having his 1390 Case towed behind a wrecker when some how it started, back end jumped off the dolly and it jumped on the wrecker, broke the transmission case ( I still never figured out what happened but I SAW the results)

We pulled a MF 50 behind a pickup in the '60s for many-a-mile; left the engine running and transmission in neutral which was what the local dealer at the time advised; limited speed to 20-25 mph; never any problems..... .

He was, like as not, exceeding the speed rating for those tyres. Three tonnes unbraked trailer, like as not. 5 tonnes if tyres were ballasted!!!
The more I think about it, the less I like it!!
You are right. Awfully dangerous - and who gets the flak when something nasty happens? Yep, the average law-abiding agriculturalist!
Some people demonstrate a certain lack of understanding of the word 'safety', or maybe have just never heard of it.

I've seen it done at slow speeds and for short distances in an area where a farmer wante to leave his tractor in a field and drive the truck back and forth. Have also seen a couple of reports of tractors being overturned doing this at highway speeds when the fluid in the tires started rotaing from the centrifugal force.

Yes, I have seen the same thing, in fact, I built a tow bar to be used with H and M Farmalls, but it is used only to help drag one out of the trees, or a very short distance on the road. The one thing to keep in mind when towing a tractor in this manner is that you should NOT go any faster than what the tractor would be capable of under it's own power. The guy you saw doing this is way overdue for big trouble.
