Alright, i think i got myself in a lil trouble. I am 20, and currently in college. I was going to a campfire tonight, near a cornfield not to far away from the college. I have a 1996 Cavalier beater car that i use to commute from school to home, which is an hour away. Well, anyway they were disking today, and a rock was on the road and i nailed it en route to the fire. I didn't think much of it but when i was going to leave, there was oil and i pierced the oil pan and dented it up pretty bad. I got it back to the parking lot, cause there still was oil in it. I am just wondering of how much of a pain is it going to be to remove the oil pan? Do i have to pull the motor? (i'm praying right now that i dont have to) It seems like clear sailing if i pull the starter and the sensor that goes to the pan. Theres just a motor mount that seems like it could possibly be in the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

My son did the same thing a few years ago with his Taurus. Had to replace the oil pan, oil pump, transmission pan, one of the oil tubes inside the pan and the gas tank. Cost about $1200 for the repairs. Also bent the crossmember in front of the engine.

Ok, so here is the update. Not only did i smash the oil pan, i smashed up the transmission pan. The verdict is that i will have to go home to replace both of em, and i have already towed the crapalier home which is about an hour away. Now i'm going to Vermont to forget my car troubles, and hopefully the parts won't cost an arm and a leg. Thank you for your advice!

At least you will know what it is costing you. My daughter had a failing sump pan on a Ford Fiesta and she took it to one of her local garages and was unhappy to pay over £200 for them to put a new one on. If only she had asked Dad. I would have found a good one at the local scrappie and fitted it for the cost of a gasket and the new old pan.
Well, at least you didn't run it with the oil light on!!
Enjoy you trip to Vermont. Let us know whether you buy spares or repair, and that all is well at the conclusion of your uncheduled service.
Regards, RAB

Hey, can it be fixed with a beer tab and JB weld? Done that before. It worked, but it illustrated our lack of resources at the time.

Not likely! You just get under there and do it yourself! You broke it, you fix it!
Question then is: do you straighten and weld/braze, or get another pan? My guess is you will mend that one. Right?

Hi,

That oil pan is a walk in the park. Pull the starter and you can get at all the pan bolts easily.

I've changed one on my Cavalier. It probably took you longer to get online and type your post than it will take to replace your oil pan...
