Hello! I'm looking for information about the road and conditions, and the trip in general from Dawson Creek, BC to the end of the road in Alaska. What will I encounter on this trip? What kind of preparations are prudent? At this stage the trip is just a thought so any advice or observation would be much appreciated.

For the most part, it is very good road. My son and I drove it in March 3 years ago and found that, at least at that time of year, there was almost no traffic. Sometimes we would go for an hour without seeing another vehicle. We were able to drive very fast most of the time.

Lots of the road is very remote from anything. I would not drive it without everything being in tip-top shape, as probably you would have to wait a long time for help. I also would suggest carrying some extra fuel. When we went through, many of the gas stops listed in the Milepost were closed and no one was around. Once we got really worried that we would run out of gas, but finally found a station open. This might not be as much of a problem closer to summer. I would expect the fuel prices to be really steep! I would also carry plenty of food and water, just in case.

You need to watch out for wildlife that might be on the road, but generally you can see for quite a long way in the mostly open country. Hitting a moose would really ruin your trip. We saw a lot of them, as well as some other smaller animals.

The scenery, especially in the Yukon and into Alaska is spectacular! And if you go toward Anchorage, you pass right by an active glacier that is only a couple hundred feet off the highway.

The trip takes at least several days if everything goes well. One of the nights we could not find any place to stay (all rooms were full), so we had to sleep in the car, which we had not planned to do. It was way below zero, and we had to run the engine all night to keep warm. If I ever take the road again, I hope it will be in a motorhome or camper.

Ours was a fun and interesting trip. Hope you enjoy yours.

Go to www.milepost.com. The book shows every mile of the Alaska highway and everything along it. Great planning guide.

The Milepost guide is indispensable for this trip. It used to be published by Alaska Magazine (may still be). Just do a GOOGLE search on "Milepost". Hope you enjoy the trip. It's a hoot! Glenn

I've been over the ALCAN 13 times, and over the years it's got better and better. There'a always around 125 miles of it tore up due to repairs, but it's still not so bad these days.

Now, i told an internet friend that a year or so back, and he and his wife drove there motorhome to Alaska. Upon returning, he proclaimed it the "trip from hell" and said he couldn't believe how bad the road is!!!

I guess him being a cailforian, he hasn't seen any honest to God bad roads in his life!!

Yeaaa, the gas prices are gonna scare you to death!!

I made that trip back in 1987. It's pretty good road for the most part. All of the original hiway has been redone. There were a few stretches of pretty rough pavement, and a few stretches of gravel. The gravel was actually better than the bad pavement. It can be a long haul between gas stations, so plan accordingly.

With the price of gas I wouldn't want to make the trip this summer.

Thanks to everyone for commenting. Before this spring, the trip seemed interesting and fun. Now it seems to be something that I really want to do. I'm planning on using my f250 diesel and spending at least a month, in Canada, then up the alcan highway and into alaska. Thanks for your advice. It sounds great!
