Bought a '00 Chevy Blazer for my wife to drive. Found orange antifreeze in it, assume it is the origional equipment. What's special about it? At four years and 74k miles, should I be looking to replace it soon? Manual warns against mixing with conventional antifreeze. Should I replace with same orange stuff, or could I flush it good, and replace with the green stuff? Can I get the orange at regular outlets or is it specific to GM delaerships?

GM intake gaskets are definately failing left and right! Sorry to say that cause I am a GM man but the orange antifreeze is still trouble. Plugs up heater cores and radiators. I suggest flushing it and replacing with green if your warranty is over. As for how long the green stuff lasts I thing that is bull. We have several tractors that have never had the antifreeze changed since we bought them... over 10 years ago! So I don't beleive antifreeze just stops working but then again I am young and dumb! HA HA!

GM was using a sealant with the Dexcool on some models that was causing the plugging.

Use the DEX-COOL. The Problems that GM has had with there engines is not caused by the coolant, the problem is in the intake gaskets. Ive been at the local GM dealership several times when they were replaceing intake gaskets. The mechanics there said that there is a problem with the silicone coated gaskets that they switched to when they went to Dex-Cool. If you change to regular antifreez you will void any engine or cooling system warranty that you have. the best thing to do is to use what it has and check it from time and watch for discoloring and unwanted deposits in the radiator.

I work at a GM dealership and Dex-Cool has a bad rap because it is bad news. Some engineer tried to build a better mouse trap and it failed in the real world. If you can get it all flushed out go with the green if not at least change the dex-cool as often as the green it is not long life.

Well, I have a 98 Blazer, started having heating problems. Found a TSB for this, acid core wash/flush of the entire system due to clogging of the heater core. If the orange stuff ever gets low, then the problems occur. Local GM wanted $400 to do this acid wash. I did a complete flush/backflush of the core, lots of crud came out. Switched to the green stuff.

Newer GM vehicles use "Dex-Cool" antifreeze, made by Texaco and other companies. It is supposed to be good for 100K miles. You can get it just about anywhere; just make sure that it says Dex-Cool.

Dex-Cool has a different formulation than older antifreezes, but it's still ethylene glycol. If you mix it with a standard antifreeze, you lose the extended life benefits.

If you google on "Dex-cool", you'll find a number of sites saying all kinds of terrible things about Dex-Cool. The fact is, about the same time GM switched to Dex-Cool, they were having serious intake manifold gasket problems with their 3.1 and 3.4 liter V-6 engines. Dex-cool got a bad rap as a result.

Another vote for Dexcool. I have used it for 8 years and it really keeps things clean and like new.

On the Chev don't forget the small block V8.

The intake manifold gasket is a plastic form with a silicon seal molded into it. The system is designed so that the plastic will set the preload on the sealing part.

I found out two things the hard way. Don't torque it down as the torque is about where the plastic meets the metal and another bump on the wrench (don't have the manual in front of me). Secondly, looking at the OEM and after market, there is definitely a quality problem with the molding on the OEM. At least on mine anyway.

Worked on cars all my life but to fix this sucker, I had to essentially lift up and prop up the maze of sensor harness and slide the manifold out from under. Must have disconnected 25 sensors. A real beast and the car had 45000 miles.

Don't blame the antifreeze on this one. Silicon is resistant to EG, heat, and lots of things except it swells when subjected to it'self (Dow 300 Silicon Oil. Not a lube, a dielectric insulator/coolant).

mechanic told my grandpa to change the orange/red anti-freeze to the regular green stuff because the orange/red eats away at gaskets.

The purple Propylene Glycol is similar to the ethylene Glycol but is non poisonous and doesn't ruin bearings as fast should the engine leak. Flush every part of the cooling system completely several times and fill with a 50/50 mix with distilled water.
