changing seals on a spool valve

I have a leaking spool valve on my 1970 Bobcat. I plan on changing the seals to see if that fixes the leak, question I have is this...can I expect alot fluid to pour out of the valve when I pull the spool? I should say, because of the location and huge job it would be to pull the entire valve assemble out, I plan on changing the seals by pulling the spool, but leave the valve body in place in the tractor. It is a M600 model. If the system is not under pressure, I would expect to have just a relativly small amount of hydraulic oil leak out while the spool is out....what do you think??? Thanks for any advice.

You normally get very little discharge of oil on a job like that. It would be well to have a 'pick' or two handy to pull out the old seals and put in the new ones. Sure beats trying to do it with a screwdriver or pocketknife.

as long as the spool is below the hydraulic oil level there will be a constant flow of oil out of the spool opening in the valve. in order to work peacefully, you should either drain the hydraulic fluid ir create vacuum in the reservouir (even by use of a vacuum cleaner).

I work a lot on m610 (same as M600) you will have approx. 1 cup of oil leak out when you pull the spool.

Hi Mike,

It sounds like you have pulled your spool valve out of your 610?? Did you leave the valve body in place and just pull the spool?? And only had about 1 cup of fluid?? That would be great!! Were you seals bad?? if so did new seals correct your leak?

thanks for all the advice!!

In place. Much less wrenching that way. Be careful shoving the spool back in or you might nick one of the O rings and have to do it over.
Don't ask how I know, slipery stuf like grese helps. Do you have a service manual? If not let me know and I will try to scan a page and send it to you, might be tricky cauze I never done it.

Thanks Mike,

Yes. I have a service manual, thanks for the offer to scan the page though. Glad to hear you have done it with the valve body in place, means it can be done!! How badly was yours leaking? Have you had any other leaks that you have fixed? I have just completed changing a front axle seal and bearings due to a leak there. I am also replacing the packing on my tilt cylnders at the same time that I am doing the spool valve.

I figured since I have that system open, I may as well do it all at one time.

Thanks again

Bruce
