Can this stump be removed with a skid-steer on tracks?

Any estimate on how long it should take?

Sincerely,

i think if it were me i would dig a little more dirt by hand and chainsaw it off just below the surface and bury it over, especialy since ya just wanna be able to drive over it.

As clean as that one is, why aren't you cutting most of it out with a chain saw????? ?????

It will be quite a job for a skidsteer, and even take a while with a small dozer. I've taken some big ones out with my 450 dozer, and they take 45 minutes to an hour to dig them out.

I'd buy about $15 worth of charcoal and get the thing burning / smoldering and see what it does in 6-10 hrs. May have to repeat. Or could just pile up some firewood after dousing the stump with kerosene or old engine oil. May take longer than a stump grinder, but will the leave the yard intact and no chips to clean up (unless you want the chips to use elsewhere).

Drill some holes ,so fuel will get down in stump first.

If you try to do it with a Skidsteer, even with tracks you will have to dig it out. You will end up with one very big hole. It is difficult from the picture to see how big the stump is. If you want to use a skidsteer for something like that, don't fell the tree first. You will need the leverage of the tree trunk to push it over.

I think your best bet would be to hire someone with a big stump grinder. Around here it would probably cost you $75 to knock that thing down.

You can take a stump out with a shovel, it just takes longer. Back to your question the skidsteer with tracks may do the job, but don't be in a hurry, a skidsteer is not a dozer. This would be much more suited to a dozer, but if you have turf you don't want torn up around bad maybe a backhoe to dig farther out and deeper around.

Drill holes in the stump. Fill with old oil, etc. Pile BBQ briqettes (sp) on top. Light. Repeat as necessary. Enjoy the brews and brats!

Thanks for all the replies. Here is a picture of my yard (taken a few days ago).

I did all of this excavation work by hand, with a pick-axe and shovel. However, it was getting too hard. So I hired a contractor. He showed up late this afternoon, and I had to go to work. He’s not sure that his skid-steer will work for this job. And I really need to get rid of the stump. I want to be able to drive behind the garage and the stump is in the way.

I was curious what could be done. Right now, there is not enough room to bring in a backhoe. However, after the excavating is done, it might be possible. I will let you know how it turned out.

Thanks for all the advice.
