Engine RPM

I'm somewhat of a newbie to farming, as I haven't worked in the field for 30 years, and then I was only "following directions".
When I'm ploughing with my 4020 and 4-16 I've found I must run a minimum of 4 mph to get a roll-over. At 5 mph I get a nice smooth finish. What RPM should I be running at? PTO speed to develop the most power? or Only as fast it takes to keep the engine from losing rpm?

You're at a good combination of gear selection and throttle position for your implement if the engine rpm drops about 5 percent from no load to full load.

With only a 4-bottom plow You should be in 5th gear, Plow wide-open, all the way down with the hand throttle only, DO NOT over-ride the stop to transport position(2500 rpm). If the tach works and is accurate You want 2000-2100 rpm, not 2500. PTO rpm was only 1900 rpm and you want to run faster than that. In really tough going You may have to drop into 4th gear but the RPM's stay the same.

Have both. I think the answer is what does the torque curve of the tractor look like (don't know).

For a rule of thumb, I like to stay close to the PTO line. If I am lightly loaded, I may drop to 1500, or in road gear going to a field I'd use 8th at 1000.

My yardstick on working is the rpm's. If your load is such that you drop over 10% in rpm's from plow up to plow down your lugging it. That's 200 rpm. If that happens, I either lighten the load or grab a gear.

Mine don't smoke, but if they did, if it smoked a little lightly loaded, I wouldn't let the smoke get too black with a load.

Best,

txblu
