I am absolutely new at garden care equipment. Please recommend me a good tractor mower to keep a 0,5 acre yard in beautiful condition. Yard has some slopes but most of it is flat. Some parts require shape trimming. IT NEVER SNOWS HERE

I also need to understand the difference between mulch and bag. Which should I buy?

I've heard good comments about the John Deere LT 160 , would it be a good selection?

thanks in advance for your precious advice

alfredo

A deere garden tractor, not a lawn tractor and with the hydrostatic transmission. The garden tractor is beefier built and able to accept optional equipment in the future that the lawn tractor can not. The Deere holds it's value if maintained and kept clean. The neighbours and relatives will look at you like you have a Rolls Royce.

Thanks to all!!!
I think I will go with the JD LT160
With that mower will I have both options: mulch and bag?
Please give me some additional tips to select one of those options.

regards and thanks again

a.

Yes, you can have a mulching deck, with a bagger syestem, but you don't really need both do you?. Although, if you get both, you would then have the option of either, because you could dismount the bagger when you didn't want to use it, and mulch.

If I read your note correctly, you have a 1/2 acre plot, not five acres. I think the John Deere LT 160 would be your best bet. Ge the 16 horse Kohler engine and you will have it for a very long and troublefree time. I just bought a new one and they are great, and very reasonably priced, compared to what you would pay for a Sears over the same period of time. I can't believe I just recommended a JD! AC's forever!

Alfredo,
I have a John Deere LT160.
I cut my lawn, about a acre.
The church cemetery, another acre,
and my mothers lawn well over a acre.
I am 100 percent satisified with the LT160
and would recomend one.
They are a trouble free machine.
Pay a little more up front but, saves a lot
over the long run.

I agree that you will want to stick with simplicity, however, I would steer away from Sears if at all possible. I have a Craftsman, and the tractor, itself, is fine, but the mower deck is junk. I've become an expert in taking the deck out from under it and replacing bearings, shafts, pulleys, you name it. (Just not very sturdy construction.) If you have a good JD dealer nearby, I'd go with a Deere. Better construction, and with last u a lot longer. IMHO

With just .5 acres to mow, the John Deere would be a good choice. I would also consider a Snapper rear engine rider with a bagging attachment. These mowers are simple to operate and have one of the best cuts available. I am a commercial cutter and use this mower for my personal yard when time permits. Just study all mowers that you may be intrested in before making a purchase. I hope this helps...

Alfredo if you don't have plenty of time to mow often, stay away from mulching mower decks. You can't let the grass get too tall or it will clog the mower and it's a real pain when you have to keep cleaning it. If you absolutly don't want any grass clippings you can get a sweeper to pull behind the tractor or a cart and vacuum attachment. If you have to mow around a lot of trees a zero turn mower will be great, and a hydrostatic transmission will also speed things along.

for a .5 acre lawn, just about anything will do for a mower, but just watch out for cheap steering. Some of the low buck models have very sloppy steering that makes it difficult to mow in a straight line. Also check into parts availibility and don't be afraid to ask the salesmen lots of questions, I know salesmen will talk up a storm why their product is better than the competitors. I like to study spec sheets and sales literature to compair deck thicknesses, turning radious, special features, etc... Maybe you should go and try out a few different brands, salesmen will be more than willing to let you try something out, because they want to make a sale!, and if you haggle with them, and let them know what you like about their competitiors machine, you might get them to throw in something extra, or maybe get alittle deal, especially, say if you wanted a bagger, you might haggle with them, and get one thrown in free with the tractor purchase.
The difference between a mulcher and a bagger, is a bagger collects all the clippings in a hopper, and then you dump the hopper when it gets full somewhere. A mulcher cuts the grass up kinda fine, and leaves it there on the ground.
hope this helps, and good luck!

Alfredo, You being a first time buyer, IMHO you should go for simplicity of operation AND upkeep. For that reason I say stay away from Snappers. Go with a Sears and maybe buy the service policy. Or look in the local want adds and find a good used one if you are mechanically inclined
