I bought some property and a Ford I9-71 tractor sn 4654 came with the purchase.
The tractor runs but it doesn't look the best. It's getting some rust.
Is this the correct model, what's it wroth, where can I find the Vin number?
Any information would be great.
Thank you
Joe

Saw this messege on page one, does your tractor have a loader on it & you are reading _that_ model tag number????? ?? They list a model real close to what you are saying, but it's the loader model, not the tractor.

Never heard of such a thing. Where are you getting those model numbers from? Can you describe the tractor - tranny, wide/narrow front, color, grill shape, etc?

Many older Fords have a hand-stamped serial number on the cast lobe in front of the clutch, below the air-cleaner.

The serial number would be the vin number, and all of your numbers look very foregn to me.

Hi Paul & JMS
The numbers I'm coming up with are on a stamped tag
which say model number I9-71 or it could be a 1. Below that it says s/n 4654. It has a 4 cylinder engine with a bucket. Not sure what you call the thing on front. It's red and white in color.

Thanks
Joe

I bet the tag he is talking about is mounted on the loader. I have a tag on my loader that reads I9-97.

Paul,

I took some pictures of the tractor. My email address is sniezjo@man.com. if you send your e mail address I could forward you the pictures.

As far as some of the questions, I do not know how many gears. As far as the date I talked with the guy who bought it and he said 1954. But he could be wrong. as far as color it's red with gray. Yes it looks like original paint. There is a tag that is riveted on to the upper right hand corner that has model and s/n. There are numbers by the starter, left hand side, that has 8258 8N. I'm not sure if the "8"'s are 8 or 5's
On the trans housing or gear box it has 8N 700?
the 2 front wheels are far apart like the rear. the fenders do not say anything just the front engine
cover has Ford on the upper front on both sides.

Someone wants to buy it for $1500 is that a far price?

Thanks much
Joe

I really only 'know' the 100 series Fords very well. If you can crop your pictures to a certain size, you can post them over to the left there is a 'help identify' section here on this site. Then many people can identify it for you. My Hotmail account is ramblerplm@hotmail.com - limited file size, probably have 400k or so room....

"8N' is a Ford model slightly older than 1954, but you mentioned it twice. '700' is a model made in 1954, it would be a row crop version of an 8N, it would be a bit taller, the rear axles would have a drop-down gearing between the axles coming out of the rear end & the axle on the wheel.

Sounds like it's not a very important tractor to you, just a lump of iron, so sounds fine, sell it & be done. :) If you don't know how many speeds the tranny has, you also won't be able to judge the condition of the machine. And on any of these models, they all range from $400 for a trashed tractor to $5000 for one in showcase condition, so hard to say really what it's worth exactly.

Well, can't be a 971 if your date is right, they came out later. Industrial Fords were often, tho not always, yellow. Is it red & white white, or red & grey? Does that look like original paint, or was it repainted?

You say the serial # is on a tag; but Ford had the numbers stamped (not cast!) right into the cast metal of the bell housing (flywheel housing) lobe on the left side of the tractor. They did not use a seperate 'tag'.

So, where is the tag located? And how do you know it's a 1954? Ford made Forson Major; NAA; 600, 700, 800, & 900 series tractors in 1954.

So, how many gears does it have forward?

Does it have one or 2 wheels real close centered in the front of the tractor, or are the 2 front wheels wide apart like the rear wheels?

Do the fenders say 'Ford" on them anywhere?

International Harvester used an "I" as the first digit on a lot of their tracotrs, but I don't regignise those numbers either as any IH model, they only made a Cub, Super- series of lettered tractors, and the new 100, 200, 300, & 400 tractors in 1954. They had a shorter serial number like you list & an actual tag as well....

Please keep us informed, you really have me curious. :)

Ah, are you saying you have a Ford 971 tractor? That would have the automatic (Select-o-Speed) tranny, row crop (taller) typically with a narrow front end but many had wide front, the bigger Ford engine of that day? Don't know where the 'I' would come from tho?

Paul- would that be an Industrial version with that number? Didn't they also make a 901 model?
