Engine knock - what is it?

While driving my Fordson diesel major home the other day, it suddenly developed a REALLY SHARP AND LOUD knocking noise in the engine (it sounded like one of the pistons was hitting somthing). But there was no excess smoke at tickover, oil pressure fine etc. Because I was 20 miles from home at it was getting dark, I had no choice but to carry on. I took it slowly but noticed a bit of extra smoke when pulling hard and a slight loss of power but by the time I had got home the knock had completely dissapeared. It still starts easily and runs really smoothly, exactly as before!
My first thoughts were that a main or big end bearing had gone but the knock wouldn't dissapear if they had. So what could it be? I would really apreciate any ideas.
P.S. the tractor is retro fitted with a 6 cyl. Ford 6D truck engine.

Might have an injector getting loose.

May have had a valve that was hanging.

Had the top land on a piston wear due to a broken ring. A piece of ring got on top of the piston and it sounded just like you describe. It went away after some good sharp hits. Compression was low on that cylinder so pulled the head and there it was, eroded ring land.

Could be a number of things.Stuck injector, piece of carbon on top of the piston, broken piece of ring or piston on top of piston, piece of ? on top of piston that passed out the exhaust, broken piston skirt, spun bearing, but this would affect oil pressure. Maybe to be on the safe side pull the pan down and have a look at the bearings, and piston skirts.
