Sand Blasting

My wife bought me a 20lb. tank type blaster for Christmas last year. She got a 25 lb. box of aluminum oxide 120 grit with it.

Is this the stuff you would use to do the castings on a tractor. Will 25 lbs. do a tractor or would you use sand? That box doesn't seem like alot, but I never used one of these before.

Thanks

I have the 40 pound size sand blaster outfit. After getting sand into bearing seal areas and then having to disasemble parts of the tractor just to remove the sand, I only use it on tractor parts that are already disassembled, that have no shafts or seals, and out side away from those kinds of parts. If your pulling all the seals and bearings you need to wash and clean the parts inside and out anyways. I still like my angle grinder with a knotted wire cup wheel for parts with bearings and seals. It is slow in any case wheather it is wire wheel or sand blasting.

I'm doind 2 Model B's. Wore out 6 knotted brushes already. One is done except for the wheels and rear end which I don't think I need to take apart. The other needs the whole casting and engine done. I guess I should stick with the grinder and use the blaster for the wheels only. I'll do those outside the barn.

Thanks to all.

Charlie

Your blaster will do OK, just not real fast. I have the 40 lb version and I can tell you it is a lot better than sandpaper, wire wheel, etc. You do need an air supply, masks and cartridge respirators are not adequate, don't put yourself at risk.

25 # won't even get you started. Around here you can buy blasting sand from the readymix concrete plants. I have never blasted a tractor but when I was a kid working in town we blasted the molds that were used for molded rubber products. That was my Saturday morning job. Took a lot of time and is very dusty, you wear a helmet with fresh air input. We worked inside on a concrete floor and reused the sand. Big heavy industrial compressors that ran 24/7 and 1½ hose and it was still slow. I would never attempt it at home.
Use your blaster to clean spark plugs. Just drill holes in a wooden 2X4 and stick the plugs in the holes to hold them. You will be very happy.
