My brakes are messed up on my Dodge and I can't figure it out. I haven't hauled any tractors for a while now. Usually when I unhook from the trailer the brakes are touchy and will lock up the rear wheels in gravel but you drive down the highway and they are fine. Now the rear brakes lock up on dry pavement if you barely touch the pedal. I can't hear the pads dragging either. Anybody else had this problem? Thanks alot for any info.

Thanks for all of the help. I pulled the drum and discovered that I had an axle seal leaking on my pads. Going to try and replace them this weekend. Thanks for all of your info.

It is most likely the rear brake's proportioning valve which adjusts the power to the rear brakes when the truck is loaded down.

I did set my emergency brake the other day to check my transmission fluid. It was the first time I have set it for about a year and it appears to move different lengths everytime I set it and let it off. I will pull the wheels and check that tomorrow. I will pull off the battery cables tomorrow as well and see if that helps. Thanks alot for all of your info. I will post back tomorrow and let you guys know if it works. Thanks again and have a nice day.

I had two dodges with the same problem,a 1997 and a 1999 model. They told me it was an anti-lock problem but they couldn't fix it.Dodge
replaced the rotors, brakes, calipers, and it still would lock up.I now drive a duramax with brakes that actually work.

pull your battery cables off and leave them off for at least 1 hr. so your computer will reset it's self. your computer is calling for more rear brakes when you got the trailer on and it don't know the trailer is no longer on. is your brake lite on in the dash?

Chances are good that the emergency brake cable is hanging up in its sheath...a 99 isn't that old but if you have a break in the sheath, it could have corroded inside and will hang up.

I agree with bo. The tip off is your statement the emergency brake pedal is different each time. Normally Dodge brakes are quite good if properly maintained.

Dodge actually uses GM made brake calipers that
for some reason cause a lot of dodge trucks to
pull to the right under sudden braking. I saw
on the news that dodge was being sued over
brake problems.

Sorry Ray, I didn't realize Dodge used calipers on the rear in '99. I thought they still used drum brakes on the rear.
