I am looking to change the engine oil in a Case 1840 skid steer. Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to get to the plate underneath (in a driveway with out a car lift) and change the filter and oil?

No reason to remove that plate... at least on our 1840. There is an acces hole for the drain plug and you get to the filter by opening the rear door.

TSH: Just wondered why you though Skid Steer would be OT. More farmers across North america own Skid Steers than anyone else. They are now 40 years old so the word antique fits.

I had two Case Skid loaders on my farm. I bought my first one 32 years ago. All it takes is a 6" pan to catch the oil, they do have 8" clearence. Drain plug is only 15" from the back. Open the back door will get you to the filter. Changing the oil is the easy part. Wait until you need some drive or hydraulic fix between the engine and seat.

Can you use the hydraulics (bucket) to liff the front end? If so, crib the heck out of it or use HEAVY jack stands to hold it up...just thinking out loud.

Yeah, I thought about that, but the "hatch" to get to the oil pan plug and filter at at the back of the machine. I guess I'm going to have to jack the rear up, block it and work on it that way. I thought maybe someone had a tip or trick that would make it a little easier.

Get two 6 x 6's and drive it up on all four wheels longways. Works every time.

Have you got a trailer? I always changed the oil on my 1845 when it was on the trailer, just back it to the rear of the trailer and you can reach everything from the ground behind.
