I have a 800 series Ford, 42hp. Can anyone tell me if it can handle a 11 ft wheel disc? The seller saids it will handle the disc, and just raise it a little if it pulls hard.

8ft. max unless you want to spend more time grunting than pulling!

That is my gut feeling also, that its too much disc. The disc has a row of notched blades and a set of round. All the blades are new. The disc is in great shape. We have considered buying it and cutting it down smaller. What do you guys think? Or maybe I should look for a smaller disc. I have sandy loam soil. He is asking $500. Its a JD disc, with large cutting blades. Maybe 16" dia?

Scott,

I have a 1964 4000 gas (same as 861, different sheet metal & color) and the 8 footer I have is all she wants in the north Ga. clay. Pretty much I cut the garden in the first time in the spring, and again in the fall, but I actually make my seed beds with a 5 footer 3-point mounted.
If I make multiple passes with the pull-behind 8 footer, tractors bogs hard and spins....Too hard on the old girl...

Neighbor has a D-17 Allis, and it is about right for the 8 footer.

Good Luck!
Tommy D.

In fall disking cornstalks or bean stubble, that will be a great combination.

In spring in soft ground with rough plowed ground it will be way too much.

So, what is it you wish to do?

Also, a heavy duty 11' Kewanee or IHC or other with big blades & agressive angle will make a 100hp tractor snort. While a worn out JD disk with 15" old blades won't work your tractor very hard. There are light finishing disks, and heavy ground-breaking disks, and all different in between. Mostly depends on blade size & blade spacing, and how heavy the disk is. Smooth or notched blades, cone shaped, and so on.

So, there is no right answer. In general, that would seem to be a little bit too much disk for your tractor, but for some jobs in some conditions with some small-bladed models it would be just right.

I pull a 10' wheel disk behind a Farmall 460 (45 drawbar HP).

This is my first season of running this combination, and the 10' disk is a great match for the 460. The tractor runs this disk comfortably with the disk wheels full up. Going up a grade will make the 460 bark, and I have to cheat a little by putting the wheels down.

The trick to disking in my opinion is not in bragging rights--that is to say how wide a disk you can pull. Proper disking requires a decent amount of ground speed so that the coulters are not only cutting but are casting dirt, too.

I'd much rather run in 3rd gear with a 10' disk than in 2nd with a 12' disk. More gets done on less fuel.

I better match for your 800 is an 8' disk.

IMHO it will handle it fine until you put the discs in the ground. A good IH disc set right and cutting deep makes my 60 hp tractors scream, have to gear down below optimum speed tokeep engine temps normal. 80 hps does ok.

I think an 11 foot disk is way too much for your tractor. I'd say 8 foot would be plenty.
