I have a backhoe with a case 207 engine and a Roosa Master Model DB fuel injector pump. The engine only runs when I let fuel drain from the injector pump's timing window. Does this indicate that the pump needs to be rebiult?

Thanks, John

Remove the return fitting from the pump and blow the any crud out of it with compressed air. Remove the fuel tank cap, so there is no pressure buildup and blow the return line to the tank out with air. You should have a free flow or air to the tank though the return line. Reassemble, and it should run. If you have further problems, it indicates the plastic torsional dampner ring in the governor weight carrier is deteriorated, and breaking up. When this totally fails, parts of the governor vibrate against each other metal to metal, and you will start to get metal particles coming out your pump return line.

The basic kit to repair this costs between $25.00 and $75.00, the higher price being if you update to the newer style elastomeric governor weight carrier.

It is doable by a carefull do-it-yourselfer, if you are clean, carefull, and follow instructions.

If there is other wear, or more problems, it'll cost you $300 to $900 at the diesel pump shop.

P.S.

When cleaning out the return fitting from the top of the injection pump, resist the temptation to knock out the glass ball and spring that most fittings have inside, as this regulates pump housing pressure.

In talking with a guy in New England who does rebuilding for a living, if you crack the plate and release some pressure and the engine recovers, your problem is in the pump or the return line is clogged thus unbalancing the pump (like cannonball stated).

If you have plastic clogging your outlet, you have satisfied both conditions of not only needing a pump rebuild, but also cleaning out the return line.
