I am converting from generator to alternator. I need a small diameter alt to fit in the spot the gen was in. Not much clearance around it. Can anyone tell me what is a good choice and what car or truck it comes in so the auto parts store can find it? Thanks!

I don't know exactly what your clearance restrictions are. Most people use the 10 or 12SI Delcos because they're common and relatively cheap. On tractors where clearance is an issue, I've been using Hitachis taken off pre 1994 Subarus. They work great, have the same hookup as the pre-1988 Delcos, and are much more compact.
I usually pick them up in the local wrecking yard. I pay $15 apiece regardless if it's an older Delco or a Hitachi. The standard Subaru alternator from the Loyales is 1" smaller diameter than the Delco, and an alternator for the smallest Subaru Justy is 2" smaller. If you're buying over-the-counter, i.e. a new or a rebuilt, the Delco will be cheaper. Although the Hitachis and the Delcos both use internal regulators and are both wired the same, the optional "self-exciting" regulators that allow one wire hookup are only available for the Delcos - as far as I know. To me, it's no big deal to hook up two wires instead of one - and wiring this way allows use of a charge-indicator light if desired.
