Is it bad to use kerosene to flush out a tractors hydralics system with it running?

I think that a gear pump would tolerate that flush for a litle while, but as I rule it isn't a smart thing to be doing. Piston and vane pumps will burn up quickly running on a light material like kero. Also be careful if you do this, the kero will vaporize and could ignite.

I use 10W oil for flushing, it's cheaper than kero.

I had water in my hydraulic system, the Massey Ferguson dealer told me to flush it out with Diesel Fuel (not as flamable as Kerosene my opinion). Drained old hydraulic fluid (4.5 gal. system) - put in about 2+ gal. of Disel - worked all the hydraulic controls drain - repeat drain fill with new hydraulic fluid every thing is ok now. I also noticed it cured a squeal when using the hydraulic controls slow.
Make sure it is the proper hydraulic fluid for your equipment.

Meyer snow plows recomend using Kerosine to flush out there pumps. When I did it, it did no harm ran it all winter.[ page three of the Meyer service manual Sept 1989]
