I have several old gas tractors that i still use on the farm. Is there any way to get gas for them without paying the road tax? I get red diesel with no road taxes, it seems that since I am using the fuel off the road in a farm tractor that earns its keep (not a hobby), there should be a better way to get fuel for them? Is there? Or do I need to just keep paying a lot for gasoline and use them as little as possible? Thanks for the input.

In Pa it looks like it's only available for PTO equipment used to grind feed.

In Missouri you keep your receipts and turn them in anually or more often for a refund from the state taxes. When you do your income tax you turn in how many gal you used and deduct the amount of tax. This is for any gasoline used offroad Tractors, Lawnmower, chainsaw etc.

Oliver farmer, Some areas still have tax free gasoline, but not many as most farmers have gone to diesel for their farming equipment. If you do use a gasoline tractor for farming, then you can I believe fill out a form declaring how much gasoline you use, and have the road tax portion refunded back to you, however, brush hoging the meadow does not qualify for this tax break, as it is considered property maintainance and not farming, just like mowing your lawn. The tractor has to be used for actual farming, whether it is in growing crops or feeding cattle or hauling hay. These are farming activities, and not property maintainance. Trucks, if driven on the roads even though they may be carrying farm products, are not allowed tax free fuel. Its a big temptation to use tax free diesel fuel when hauling grain to the elevator since it is so expensive, but the penalty for getting caught with red diesel fuel far outweighs any benefit of cheating. It doesn't work to tell the arresting officer that you ran out of fuel and the only fuel to get you to the closest fuel depot was that which the friendly farmer had syphoned from his tractor. They have heard that one a zillion times. The government doesn't allow for much leeway in the way of us not paying "our fair share."

???? Off-road is off road, doesn't matter if you are mowing the medow or the lawn or whatever. If you ain't on the highway, you don't have to pay the tax.

The fine where I live (SC) for using off-road fuel in a tagged vehicle is 1000$ per gallon. If you have 15 gallons of died fuel in your tank, it is 15000$ in fines.

Have to pay the tax; Keep slips; Get state tax back by fiscal year after filling out small form ; get the federal tax back when you fill out your IRS form 4136 - it's annual.

Probably varies from province to province and state to state but here in Manitoba the only place purple (tax exempt) gasoline or diesel can be used is in equipment relating to the farming operation by a bonafide farmer. If you're not a farmer you can't use it in your lawn mower, chain saw etc. or your bush hog tractor or anything else.

I asked around for farm gas here(KY) and never found any, probably only diesel. All the ag stores take the tax off if you sign a form that your ag. Seems like a station could do the same thing.
