I was the fortunate recipient of a 1998 John Deere 5200 from my late uncle.I was noticing that the 5300 and 5400 share the same engine size but have different horsepower ratings. Is there any way to increase the horsepower of my 5200? Can the 5400 turbocharger be put on the 5200? I cannot sell or get rid of the tractor for sentimental reasons but I would like to increase the HP.

Trade it for a 5000 "20" series before your's falls apart. The 1st and 2nd generator were terrible. The 3rd generation 5000's aren't too bad. Look up the parts list and see if common drive train components were used before you twist something off by cranking up the torque. What is the reason for having to hot rod the tractor, especially a sentimental tractor?

torbocharged engines are different from na engines in more ways then one: the pistons and rods are different, so are the injectors and fuel pump. even the cyl. head is different.
you probably can 'just add on' a turbocharger (very expasive though), but you won't get the power and rliebility of a 'turbo built' engine.

The early 5000's have a huge amount of clutch, tranny and hydraulic failures!! Some get lucky, and don't have a lot of problems, but way too many do! I'm sorry to say, but the old deere and company would NEVER have put there name on such a poor design!! You are lucky enough to have not had to pay for yours, so at least if it breaks, you can afford to fix it! CJ
