I've just aquired a 1950 Farmall M and have taken the advice of many on this message board and changed the oil (I dropped the oil pan and cleaned the sludge out) and am in the process of changing the other fluids. What should I replace before i attempt to start it? Should I replace the plugs, distributor and oil filter? Where do I get these parts from? Also, should I drain the engine block water jacket or is it likely it is empty? The previous owner said that the tractor had been running a couple of years ago? I'm a rookie at this sort of thing so I'm unsure of the next steps.

N.A.P.A. will have everthing you need. you will probably need to change the points too. they are pretty cheep. you are on the right track another thing is distributor and roller button they tend to corrode while setting. if you have any more questions just ask. tractor.

ya, I'd replace the plugs; Take the distibuter apart , clean & grease; replace the oil filter and put in the new gasket that will come with it if you get one from case ih, contrary to popular opinion, if you put a new oil filter gasket in right you may never have to do it again. If they ain't leaking and ain't old and hard, I never disturb them. Good idea to clean and grease the starter and generator too. Check for quantity and quality of grease in the rear end. Take the drain plug loose below the PTO and if there is water you can let it drip past the threads without draining the oil.

First, get yourself an owner's manual. If you have no IH dealer close, try Binder Books. You're on the right track, cleaning the oil pan of sludge is a good start. Replace the oil filter, drain and flush the cooling system, replace the plugs, points and condensor. These parts should be available from NAPA if there is no IH dealer close to you. You will probably also have to replace the battery. If it's set for a couple of years, it may not take a charge. If it's still the original 6 volt system, the battery should be installed with the positive terminal grounded. Pay close attention to how things are connected as you work through each of these tasks. Good Luck!
