Hi.

My JD 1530 clutch died and the mechanic split it and says I am in luck - only a clutch finger was broken and the rest is good.

I know motors but not clutches - what is he talking about?

Thanks in advance.

Clutch fingers are levers placed radially on the pressure plate. The outer end is attached to the pressure plate. The inner end is pushed towards the engine when the clutch is disengaged thus pulling the pressure plate away.

He could be talking about 2 differant parts one is the fingers on the preasure plate or it could be the clutch release fork/finger

Old is correct. If one clutch pressure plate finger broke the clutch would still work.

Bob is absolutely correct. A clutch will not work with one finger broke. I have had that happen at least twice and the pressure plate had to replaced. The tractor could not be stopped except to shut the engine off.

Ray,

I beg to disagree. If one of the clutch fingers is broken, it is unlikely that the clutch would release enough to allow shifting.

I went to jdparts.com, and they call the fork a "FORK", but the finger is called a "LEVER"!

There are two clutches used, depending on whether it is a live PTO tractor, or not, and about 5 different levers, only one of which is shown to be available, for about $52.00. The Deere fix for the others is to replace the plate, for about $415.00!

Perhaps I,m wrong, but doesn't the pressure plate "fingers" sit in a relaxed position until the clutch pedal is depressed, then the "fingers" spring away as the throwout bearing presses against them? The outside of the throwout bearing does not turn when pressing against the "fingers", it just spins inside itself. This allows the "fingers" to spring individually (all at the same time). We've removed pressure plates with broken "fingers" from vehicles, including tractors, when the job was began to replace the clutch disc, and the vehicle was driven into the shop for repair. That's how it was in the 50's & 60's while I worked my way through school at my Uncle's shop.

Each of the 3 or 4 "fingers" pulls the pressure plate away from the lined plate, against sprig pressure. If one of the fingers s broken, the pressure plate will be pulled away from the lined plate unevenly, and the area of the pressure plate that is supposed to be retracted by the broken finger will "drag", or not release at all.
