Can anybody out there tell me what is used to put on a belt pully to keep it from rotting. What ever they might be made of. Wood, paper, leather. Ive seen some with a black coating on them.

i use white shellac and keep mine dry. three things my dad taught me to never get wet; a wooden ladder, any sisel or hemp rope, and the thresher belt. Add the paper pulley to make it four. If you can't keep the tractor inside, at least take the pulley off and bring it in when it is not being used.

I think the black coating could be belt dressing that often gets used. I've heard of people soaking them in old motor oil. I put a coat of Cupranol on mine a couple of times a year. Mine sits outside most of the time and they have held up fine so far.

They're made of paper, I believe. Some of the black coatings look like paint to me. I used clear urethane on mine, but can't let it get wet very often.
