I called my local scrap yard and enquired how much they pay per ton and was quoted $50 a ton for prepaired scrap, which is heavy steel cut into 5' pieces. $25-$30 a ton for everything else. I think my local scrap is paying poorly because there is no competition around. They used to charge if a farmer wanted to leave his old machinery there not too long ago, and they won't pay you a cent for it if you bring less than a ton load. I was really hopeing for better prices than that. Then if you wanted to buy something they put the price right to some stuff, like I wanted to buy the needles out of an old JD14t that they had, and they wanted $100 for them.

helped the local man load a truck load of #2 2 ft pieces this morning. Said his buyer dropped the price $45.00 a ton yesterday and $25.00 2 weeks ago. Buyer told him that predictions are the top dollar will be here in early July better than we have ever seen. Hope he is better at predicting than the weather people! Roger

I guess it really is location, location, location. I got $120 a ton for US #2 haevy melt and $85 for cast. Last 3 load I sent were mixed #2, cast, and shredding steel and they gave me $120 for all of it.

Have a buddy that runs a scrapyard, he says prices got really out of hand but have recently settled back to sensebility, but keep in mind that type of business depends on buy low sell high mentality, all the cost is in wages for handling

I had a simular experence here in Canada last spring, I took in 1110 lbs I got $22.20.
Then the next week I needed 2 pieces of 1/8 sheet
steel about 15" x 20", After driving around the yard I found it, when I went to pay she said $18.00 I said "WHAT" she said well deducting the weight of the truck it's 100 lbs. I took them off the truck put them on the scale 45 lbs. I tried to explain the extra 55 lbs was the mud from their
yard. She then said $15.00, and then said don't come back. Must be nice to be so independent.
To make matters worse the week before I had scrapped a piece 24" x 24" could have made do.
It puts me in mind of tractor parts, looks like a $40.00 part but they want $450.00.

Pretty typical. It is how they make their money - buy low, sell high. With no competition, they rule the roost.
