I have a Onan P220V that the battery was run down and when I charged it back up I didn't notice that the key was left on. Now when I try to start it I get no spark while cranking but spark plug will fire when you release the key to the on position but the spark looks weak. The only way to start it now is to crank the engine till it starts to flood , release the key and the momentum sometimes is enough to get it started. Once started it runs fine. Have checked the ignition key but it seems fine. Tried new plugs but no change. Also want to add that the charging system wasn't charging the battery for a long time but found that a connector was bad, replaced it and it shows charging around 4-5 amps at full throttle

You probably have a bad ign. switch. If you have power coming out of the ign. terminal when the switch is on,you should also have power coming out of the terminal when cranking. If not the switch is bad. Onans do not use a ignition circuit on the solenoid. One other thing to check is the safety circuits on the machine. Some have ignition interuptor switches on the seat or pto,or transmission.

I presume your engine uses breaker points and a coil with two high tnesion towers?

If it does, in fact have breaker points, here's what you need to check.

1.) Check your battery voltage WHILE CRANKING with the starter. It should be above 9 Volts, if it's below try a known good battery.

2.) Take a close look at points to see if they are discolored and burned. If the switch was left on, this is likely.

3.) Likely, the coil has been damaged by the internal heat generated by the battery draining through the coil when the switch was left on. You will probably need to replace the coil.

sorry it is electronic ignition

Steve,

I think that Ron in AR is on to something. I don't know about your Onan engine, but commonly, there will be a resistor in the primary coil circuit. If that resistor exists, there is usually a wire from the "Start" connector on the ignition switch or from a small connector on the starter solenoid etc., that provides the full battery voltage to the coil during starting (bypassing the resistor) but then goes away when the ignition switch is released to the "On" position. With the switch in the "On" position, the battery voltage is applied to the resistor which reduces the voltage that is subsequently applied across the coil.

So, if battery voltage is not getting to the coil when the ignition switch is in the "Start" position, the engine won't have any spark while cranking, but when the ignition switch is released to the "On" position, it will have spark and might start.

You might want to ascertain whether or not you have an external resistor, and then how that resistor is bypassed during starting. I think you might have a problem in that bypass.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Try this... check the ignition switch for feed to the coil when in the start position. Had a car that had that problem once. Might also want to check the coil itself. Some systems run a coil with an internal resistor. When starting, it starts on 12 volts, then goes to 6 volts to run. It might also have an external resistor that does the same thing.

Does it have an electronic ignition? Once had an engine that did the same thing and found out the cranking voltage was below the operational threshold of the faulty ignition module. Release the switch, the voltage rises and the igntion fires.

I have an Onan generator that did something simular, When I held the start button it would start but as soon as I released the button it died. But as long as the starter button was held it would run. I found I had a bad solanoid switch. Hope this helps.
