I was wondering what you all think is the cheapest running diesel tractor. I don't mean just running the longest on a given amount of fuel, but maintenance, parts, etc. I'm looking to upgrade from a 42 Farmall H to something larger to handle pretty much all farm tasks. Looking for something that has 30 plus hp, Live pto, Live hydraulics, 3pt. hitch, and possibly power steering. A Farmall 560 diesel fit the bill, i thought, but color is no object. thanks for any and all info.

This may not be the response you are looking for but Three years ago I got tired of fixing my Super H and my 2020 John Deere. I still have them but I found a MF dealer with a supply of 231S off lease. Got good financing from AGCO and 3 years later it was paid off. Still have the SH and 2020 and use them but the 231S is the Turkish version of a 240 has Perkins deisel gets unbeleivable fuel efficiency. When you have a job to do and only a short time to do it it is nice to know your tractor will start. Plus I am sure I will never buy another rig and I still use my old stuff and keep it better for the long run. My $.02

For me, it's "easily" been the smaller "06" series of Deutz tractors!! Very reliable, all modern, and very easy on fuel!!! Robert

I'll have to agree with Robert. Deutz was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the question. I've got a 130 06 here thats easy on fuel, and I passed up a 60 or 68 06 (can't recall for sure) this spring that was near perfect for $3200. Sure wish I'd have bought it, but my 706 was in need of an overhaul too..had to make a choice, probably chose wrong, but thats life!
On the bright side, I have a freshly o/h'd 706 gas now....

My Uncle had a 62 HP Deutx very easy on fuel, Hyds very slow power steering very slow. I would have not swapped my 460 D even up for it. 460 and 560 easy on fuel 656 would have better power steering same eng. as 560

The John Deere 1650 built by Yanmar set the record
at nebraska tests for hp hours per gallon of fuel in the late 1980's. Don't know if it still holds ? And these series of Deere's built by Yanmar are darn near idiot proof.

That 1650 was the 1st Deere to beat the old 720/730 two cylinder record set in 1956. The 1650 was all JD Moline diesel. The compact tractors eg 750,850,950,755,855,955,1070,990, garden tractors, 2000,4000 series and Gators have Yammer engines.

FYI I just double checked the JD models 1250,1450,1650 are YANMAR engines and all. This info is right from the John Deere parts microfiche serial # ID chart only listed manufacturer code listed is CH which stands for Yanmar. Also all the parts have CH prefixes which also stands for Yanmar. If these tractors weren't so rare we could go look at one and the tags would no doubt say Yanmar on them like the ones on my model 750.

Rich, one word of caution on getting a 560. I think they are all 2 point. That leaves you with finding 2 point equipment or using adaptors. You might check with the Farmall board on their thots. I personally never liked the looks of the adaptors, but I have never used them either.

For me gota be an MF from the 100 series

Perkins diesel - v.reliable (especially 3cyl) and very low maintenance costs. oesnt use much fuel either.

I personally like the 135, but all in the 100 series seem to be very good

I have seen some really ugly fords and mf tractors that still run great. Maintennance on these is fairly reasonable w/ aftermarket parts. If looking for new, the Farm Trac is the old Ford style. Many of the castings look to be the same as the older fords.

Ill second on the long only drawback ive found is parts are a little harder to get but NOT impossible I have a 310 dt 4x4 1981 bought new and all that has been done to it is a set of bearings cause dad didnt change the oil in 1100 hrs and it plugged up the screen didnt damage anything but wouldnt hold good pressure anymore and it needed a clutch anyway it spent almost 20 years as only tractor and got used for things that should have been done by dozer or waayy bigger tractor never burned over 1 gph and seldom close to that good luck mike

Rich, although they are a bit clunky and have weak hydraulics a Long will deliver more hp per gallon of fuel than 98% of others in the field today. They do however have other drawbacks. GL

Rich: Of the 16 tractors I farmed with in my career all the way from a Farmall Super A to a 1066, and I did have a 560D and a 656D. The most economical horse power I ever had on my farm, were the 560 and 656. Repairs were almost nil under 10,000 hours and they would run a 9' haybine or baler with thrower on one Canadian gallon of diesel fuel per hour. I am just speaking for IH models as I am sure other makes had their good ones also. I think some of the 4 cylinder Deere's and Ford's from the same era were quite good also.

I think the perkins diesel in the MF is a very economical engine as well as a blue Ford.
Don't know much about the others.
