I was wondering why IH never put the 817 in a 4WD except for the big 4300. People complain about DV-800 so why didn't they use the straight 6? Was it a good/bad engine? I believe it was used in construction equipment until it was sold to Dresser in 1982. Thanks for the help.

i often wondered the same thing. I had a 4586 that the bottom went out on the VT800 and repowered it with a Cummins 855. What a difference. I also has a TD25C dozer with the DT817 and it also was a powerful engine. It was after cooled and put out 350 hp. Smoked a lot when ever the dozer changed direction..... ...

i spent a considerable amount of time around the IH construction equipment from the late 60's to early 90's. Operated a new IH TD 25C logging tractor in 1969 with the DT 817 in it. IH (Hough) used the same engine in the H100 and H120 articulated loaders. When Dresser owned Hough, they used a Cummins engine. The main reason for not using the DT 817 engine in a wheel tractor was physical size and horsepower output. In the 70's, IH did not have a tractor which could handle a 300+ HP engine. I bought a new IH 1566 in late 1976 and it had the reliable DT 436 putting out about 160 HP. The IH 4100 and 4300 were distant cousins of the Hough Payloaders such as H80, H100 and H120. All of this equipment was made by the Construction division, Frank S. Hough Co, and not by Farmall. Ray

The last 4186's were built at FARMALL in 1977. They had their own special little assembly line area way down on the west end of the plant where about 5-6 guys assembled two tractors a day. After 4186 production ended the 686 & H-86 production went on that line and off the main Start and Finish assembly lines. The 4300's I've read were built by Hough, and the 4100 series may have started at Hough, but they finished building them at FARMALL.
