How to check out a Seller?

I've been looking and researching and web searching and reading for about 18 months, I've finally found the tractor I want in Manitoba! Tractors are expensive in Wash St!!! The question is how do I know the seller is reputable? I'm worried about sending him a wire transfer for that much money.
I found the tractor ad here and haven't seen any negative feedback on the forums. He has several tractors for sale so I'm assuming, & he says he's been selling here for a while. Thanks for your help

Mr. Underwood...There isn't substitute for demo'ing a piece of equipment yourself, but there are instances when a buyer can't demo a piece of equipment. Hence, if you decide to buy a piece of equipment w/o demo'ing it, there are methods to protect yourself. You can contact a banking institution or law firm, and ask them if they offer a "fudiciary account" service. Basically, the banking institution or law firm will hold the funds in escrow until both parties agree the contract has been fulfilled. The seller sells a red tractor, and the buyer gets a red tractor. Then, the funds are released based on specific guidelines in the contract. Key Points: (1) You can't withdraw the funds from the account once you deposit the funds. (2) Specific guides should be incorporated into the contract to release the funds upon arrival of the equipment, guidelines if a party member backs out of the deal, and set guidelines in the event of a dispute (3) Some banking institutions and law firms will charge a fee for the service. Granted this process has some paperwork involved, but it's designed to protect the buyer and seller by getting a 3rd non-related party involved. Once you have a template contract created, you can use it for other equipment purchases, and avoid transferring funds through PayPal, risky wire transfers to the seller, or other methods. NOTE: I am not a laywer nor act as a lawyer, but I learned of the method from a buyer who wanted to buy a piece of equipment from me, the seller.

Dick,
If it is Vern - BEWARE. A while back I was looking at a tractor he was selling - all I had was a fuzzy scanned polaroid picture so I verified, double verified, then asked 2 more times if the tractor I was looking at had factory round spoke wheels and got a yes everytime. He was helpful with shipping but when it got here they were cutoffs. After contacting him, he said I should have asked more questions and been more specific. He never made the deal right. The wheels were the only reason I bought the tractor. There are several people selling out of Canada and there are some nice tractors coming out of there. Be Careful & Good Luck!

I can about guess who you are buying from {they always advertize alot of tractors from Canada on this site}. Probably nothing wrong with the guy. However remember these guys are what I call scalpers. They run around buying these tractors and then sell them to make money---nothing wrong with that. But the problem I've always run into is they have very little or no history on the tractor. I'm not buying a tractor from anyone unless they can verify everything they say about it. How many times have you been told it has low hours---then ask him can I have the name of the previous owner---oh--sorry I forgot his name. I prefer buying from private sources. You should be OK at the border as long as you have receipts etc. Oh--p.s.---watch the guy from Minnesota that puts " around his ads--he's no good.

Is it Vern or Al? Have never heard anything adverse about Vern- he seems to sell at reasonable prices, and if its too high, wait a few days- he'll repost with a lower price. Al has had some adverse press here- others say he's fine. I suspect part of it may be the problem all resellers have- they don't know about the tractor either, so if it turns out to be a problem, buyer is upset that he wasn't told.

If he will accept credit card, that will give you some recourse in case of a problem. Also you might want to check on the paperwork and expenses of imporitng a tractor from Canada to U.S. I understand that some people have run into problems at the border.

There are no duties or other costs in regard to the importation of farm equipment from Canada. There is a small handling fee and all documents must be in order. Those that have had trouble did not have the proper documentation or it was incorrect. If this guy sells equipment which is shipped across the border as an ongoing business he will know what is required. All Canadian dealers do...

How do you know the seller is reputable? You go and meet him and look the tractor over and drive it. That is as close as you are going to get. If he won't hold the tractor for a week or two so you can arrange to come, he is not reputable. His other interested buyers will NOT disappear. If they want the tractor, they will wait. If you buy a tractor sight unseen from a person based on the ad, you are probably asking for trouble. If a visit is not practical then you should probably look for a local tractor, even if you have to pay a little more.

This was posted by Dell (WA) today... looks like good prices to me !!!!! Went to Enumclaw auction this afternoon. No point going too early, they's don't sell farm equipment until afternoon. Not much bargins in implements, Almost all sold for around $500. (new or used 3-point) 6-tractors (all runing), 1950 Case $500, Co-Op #2 with NEW REARTIRES and rebuild Chrysler 6-cyl engine estate sale $500. (tires were worth more than tractor sold for) Co-Ops from Mid-West are "unknown" in the great North-Wet. Blue Ford 6000 Comander with 6 cyl and SOS tranny $1300. Fergie TO-30 with DOWN-PRESSURE frontend loader (FEL) didn't sell at $2400 ($2500 reserve) it appeared to be in excellent condition. Fergie TO-20 in rusty-ruff condition sold for $2000
