I bought a WD9 at a farm sale last week. A good looking tractor-tires all up, nice tin and a stuck motor. It wasn't until I went to load it that I realized the rearend was stuck too. I am hoping that it is just the brakes hanging up. Does anyone have any experience with this?

This time of year there is a high possibility of the rear end having enough water in it to be frozen and prevent the bull gears turning. Equally high possibility and goes for any temperature is that the brakes are stuck. They will rust and adhere to the brake shoe. This can sometimes be a bit of a challenge to get them loose. You can often loosen them by hitting the brake drum all around with a good heavy hammer (not a sledge). I know two previous posts mentioned these, but these are the two areas to look at first as they are the two most common causes of this problem.

Could also be the transmission is stuck in 2 gears at once - fairly common on IHC tractors of this era when the end of the gear lever gets worn.

With the gear lever in neutral, knock the pin out the deck casting extension gear lever fits into, remove the lever then peek inside. The slots in all 3 shifter rails should be aligned and centered in the opening. If they are not, use a suitable pry bar (big screwdriver, etc) and pry all the rails into the middle position.

If it was below freezing, water in the trans will freeze the bull gears also.
