I want to start priming some of the small parts I've taken to bare metal on warm days (when we get them). Is their a primer in a rattle can I can trust? The final topcoat will be Persian Orange.

Should I wipe down everything with mineral spirits before I spray to get any dirt or grease off?

CH,
Those spray guns are yours for the borrowin'. Just say the word. I've got to get a piece of mine back from the welder out south of the village, so I could drop them off, but Mr. weatherman isn't supposed to cooperate with you. P.S. I warned you the spray gun might go only rea/yellow on you!

The primer you use needs to be compatible with the paint you use for the top coat. If you will be using a basic enamel paint, such as you would buy at the farm store, then you should be able to use a primer in spray cans of the same brand.
One thing to remember though, when your tractor was originally painted, the manufacturer did not use any primer, it was just simply painted. I have to agree with Nebraska Cowman, the primer is sometimes an unnecessary step. The only time I use primer on my red tractors is when I need to fill in some slight rust pits on the sheet metal.

I may be faulted for it but I don't trust any primer and have quit using any. Just make sure you get good coveage with your paint. Don't be afraid to give it lots of times over. start out slow, first coat is "tack coat" don't try to make it orange all at once. Watch for places that are hard to get at or easy to miss. I have a couple tractors here now that were painted several years ago an left outside. They show places like the headligts, steering shaft, ect. that just didn't get enough paint. Have good lighting so you can see. I like to paint outside but that is rather risky due to bugs or and unexpected wind. If you store your tractor inside it should be good for many years. I have an Allis WD that I painted in 97 and it is a working tractor. Feeding daily all winter, I wax it every year or two and it still looks good and it was cheap farm store paint to boot!
