I am going to look at an Allis Chalmers WD45 w/ loader and don't know too much about them. Any critical areas to evaluate, questions to ask? It includes a scraper and mower and has been in the barn for 4 years without running. They said it started right up after cleaning the sediment bulb and filter. What is a fair price for this setup?

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

I know it has been inside, but still look at the shifte boot. If it is OK well OK. If it is missing or in poor condition there could be water in the transmission/rear end/pto.

The things that are most telling on the condition of the mechanicals are the wobble in the hand clutch lever and the brake and clutch pedals. Also look at the bushing in the qudrant that the steering shaft goes through. Next thing to check is how well the shifter works, is it sloppy or are the gates easy to find. Does the hand clutch work, does it slip? put the tractor in a high gear and start the tractor out by using the hand clutch. Generally the most used gears, 2nd and 3rd, will show the most wear and this will be revealed by then coming out of gear when driving and going down hill or backing off of the throttle quickly. As always, paint and tires mean a lot and how much cobbleing has been done to a really great tractor. $500 not running and all there. $2000 everything is good and it is field ready. I've seen a couple show queens bring $3000 and $3500. Probably a #9 loader which is worth a 100 or so. I own four of them and they are used to farm with.

WD45s were awesome tractors in their day. Engines can be overhauled over and over again. Late WD45s had power steering which would be a help with a loader as would a wide front end. Allis had their own lift system on the back which was basically a 3 pt hitch upside down. Unless you can get a complete set of Allis implements you will have to convert to a standard 3 point hitch which is easy and about 300 bucks. WDs have two clutches. Foot clutch stops everything. Hand clutch stops tractor allowing hydraulics and PTO to keep running. Price depends on condition, demand, etc. I've seen a few WD45s for sale on YT. If it's in good shape it's worth 2 or 3 thousand. Less if it's beat up. For the money they're hard to beat.
