They aren’t worth much. Most people don’t want to use them any more. They are a little hard on fuel. I live in WA where there are a lot boats that used Detroit Diesels for gen sets. They surplus them for newer engines because it cheaper to buy a newer more fuel efficient engine. They show up at equipment auctions all the time.

I have acquired several 3-71s in the last couple of years. I got one real good running engine for free. I bought two at auction for $25. The I payed $100 for one 3-71 that did not run. I paid $150 for one on a gen set that did run. I paid $450 for a good running one with a 4 valve head.

If you are looking to buy a 3-71 or any of the two stroke DD stay away from the low blocks. They aren’t worth hauling home. I would pay more for one with a 4 valve head and more for one with the large air ports in the block

I've got an old Dynahoe 160 combination loader, that I keep around for odds and ends. Two years ago, I replaced the engine with a reconditioned engine from Detroit Diesel. The engine was right at $5000.00 with my trade in. We did the take out/install.

I had a chance a few months ago to buy two HD7 Allis crawlers, both with Detroit 3-71s for $1000 and passed it up. One engine ran fine, and one was set up.
