I just bought a IH 350U and I was hoping that someone could help me with a couple of questions. The TA works but slips (slips in the low range), Is there a adjustment to it or is there some thing seriuosly wrong? Last question, the rear end makes noise when the pto is not being used and when I engage it, the noise doesn't seem as bad. Is that some thing I need to get looked at soon? Thanks to any one that can help

Brian

Do as "dehermesc" says, get a manual and adj. T/A. I assume tractor has independent pto. Using manual, adj. it also. The ind. pto on these tractors esome noise when disengaged because there's more parts turning than when engaged.

Sound like you have a torque about out. That Pto noise is in a lot of tractors IH that used the planetary type of unit. Most times it won't make the noise if you don't lock it in the off position Leave the torque ahead and use it.

Find a manual and adjust the TA - if left in its present state it will go out in no time. If it has't been adjusted lately (doubtful if there is no manual) that could be the cause for slipping. When adjusted properly the TA is much more durable then many people believe. We've replaced one TA in a 656 that had well over 9,000 hours on it, other tractors (560, 856, 886, 1456, 1466, 1566, 1486, 1586) have had tens of thousands of hours put on them only to overhaul the TA with the rest of the power train.

One other thing to check is if the oil in the rear end has been changed lately (or at all). Manual recomends 80W-90W but Hytran has been found to be much better. Not uncommon for the the rear end to have 3-5 gallons of water in the lower part of the trannie. Water as a lubricant tends to cause strange noises.
