Hello. I just bought a Cat 226 that needs tires.
This machine will run on construction sites where nails, rebar, etc., can poke tires.
What kind of tires should I get? (Solid rubber?, foam-filled? etc.?)
Currently it has 10x16.5 tubeless.
Thanks.

I have Hutchenson Inserts on my JD250 skid steer. These are inserts which fit inside a regular tire, so when the tire wears out you dismount and replace. (easier said than done) These wheels ride better than foam filled but not as good as air filled tires. The rims are part of the product and have 8 or so bolts that hold them together. I would guesstimate that added weight over air tire system is about 60 lbs. per wheel. The set of wheels and inserts I have are on their second skid steer and 4th set of tires. I make my living running this machine doing a wide assortment of work and would not be without them ! What a pleasant feeling to see a nail or other tire killer sticking out and not even worrying about it!!! I think the company mainly sells its product to the military. The inital cost was not cheap but either is down time. My 2 cents,
Andy

you can use high ply # construction tires (like forklift tires) or aircraft tyres, youll need, of course matching rims.

How about filling tires with foam? What are the downsides of that?
The "Air Boss" solid rubber look very interesting - must be expensive?
I'm hoping to get by at $400 - $500 for 4 tires.

I'd go with "Air Boss" tires. They are rubber segments that bolt on a special wheel. Excellent for construction sites, and they don't have the excess weight of a foam filled tire, which are extremely heavy.

We run foam in our backhoe and skid steer tires with no problems due to the weight. I've thought about the solid tires but think the would be really heavy.

The segmented tires weigh much less than foam filled tires, there is no comparison. I can't pick up a backhoe or skid steer foam filled tire, but I can lift a segmented tire and wheel assy.
I just think that should be considered for purposes of repair/maintenance and trailering/hauling.

Mike, what do you do to get foam-filled tires off the rim when it is time to replace them? I have always wondered about this.... Regards, Davis
