Hello All.. I usually stay over on the Red and the Persian Orange boards but today I have a general question. I'm trying to help an older feller down the road while he recovers from knee replacement. His 801's lift has reportly been slowing down for years....well, it's at about stop now. I hauled it home today, checked the fluid and found a sump full of black molasses !! I attempted to drain the oil through the drain plug and nothing came out...that is until I poked a screwdriver through 3/4" of hardened sludge !!! Now the question(s): What is the recommended procedure for removing the accumulation of crud without promoting seal leakage ?? Does this model FORD have a strainer/filter and where is it located ?? Thanks in advance, Ed in 'ole Virginny

I've cleaned a few hyd sumps that were pretty well crudded up by pulling the top cover and using a garden sprayer or similar with an old paint brush or such and scrubbing the insides out. Install a new gasket on the drain plug, replace the cover gasket, and fill with 134 or equiv. oil.

No filter. One of the main weaknesses of the old Fords. Makes it doubly important to change fluid on a regular basis (I do mine about every other year). As for cleaning...hmmm....I've never had to do it, but I've read on the Ford board of people using kerosene in the lift system to flush out the sludge. You might want spend some time in the archives of the Ford board and/or tap the expertise of the guys there.
