Just bought a used f-350 and the transmission went out a little over a month latter.Should I bite the bullit and have a Ford dealer replace it or go to a transmission shop (AMCO)? The truck is diesel, 4x4, with 80,000 miles. Anyone else ever had problems with these tranmissions? Thanks in advance for all the help, you all are the greatest source for information I know of.

Todd, I am a member of TheDieselStop and I would highly recommend the BTS Tranny. Brian is in Arkansas I think. www.Brianstruckshop.com From what I have gathered on TDS, you can go to his shop and he will do the work or he will ship you a tranny. I also understand he will ride with you after the install and you can tell him what you don't like and he can more than likely correct it. There are alot of PSD owners that have his tranny with many modifications and basically double stock HP and don't have problems. To answer the question about the air filter, I used the K&N for years, until I switched to a full size paper element made by Donaldson with a custom mount and plumbing. The K&N flows great when "fresh" and don't filter that well then. After the crud builds up, it filters better but you don't have the flow. Contact Dale Isley at Tymar Performance.tymarperformance@msn.com or call 509-922-8785 he can answer all questions. He has alot of tests of different filters. You also have Scheid Diesel in Effingham, IL and Terre Haute,IN. Anyway good luck, Kent

You could just sell the ford and buy a Chevy with duramax diesel with the Allison auto and have a real heavy duty trouble free drivetrain! Even ford uses the Allison in their medium duty trucks.

I have to add a reflection of this thread. I was surprised to see that people were having trouble with the automatic trans. Out here(west) with all the long mountain pulls and RV use that I see, I don't hear about anyone being disappointed with the automatics behind the powerstrokes. In fact, with the power chips and banks shift kits I see I'm amazed that they don't blow them by the dozen. The Manual transmissions seem to fail regularly, we have replaced several of them with new from ford cause when the manuals die, they are junk. As an example, I had a guy come in Friday with a 98 powerstoke with an automatic that had 238,000 miles on it and he pulls a heavy 5th wheel. Now, he came in with a trans code set and I think he may end up with needed a new one but over 200,000 miles isn't unusual. Had one awhile back that was a delivery truck for a trailer manufacturer with over 300,000 on it and it was engine and trans original.

So, I, in my own little world, would be hugely disappointed if my ford auto trans went south at only 80,000 miles. I do recommend and push that RV trans be serviced every 20-25,000 miles.

I also would not use an aftermarket air cleaner on the powerstoke. The 2600 $$ is a competitive price for a NEW trans, stock torque convertor and installation. I would also replace the cooler at the same time.

Hi Todd,

The guys on thedieselstop.com that are into racing/drags are using a BTS ? tranny, about $2600 delivered if I remember correct.

In the last couple years reading threads, I don't remember ever seeing a bad post about BTS trannys.

Do not use a K&N on the 7.3 airbox as it don't fit and leaks DIRT, a known K&N problem they refused to fix.

A independant study two uears ago showed the Ford stock air filter out preformed all tested filters including the leaking K&N junk in both CFM flow and dirt intrapment .

I"ve seen a lot of trucks with K&N, cleaned some too, just can't say I'm impressed with them, for what they cost. $300 for an air filter? yikes. One thing for sure on any truck, DO NOT PULL A HEAVY LOAD, OR TRAILER IN OVERDRIVE, should be in big RED letters right on the speedo. John at a chrysler dealer in Nebraska.

I just got the estimate back to replace the E4OD trans. in my truck and Ford says that they want $ 2900.00 parts and labor. They also said that they would recomend that I replace the air filter box and element with some sort of super duty unit that is supposed to do alot better job than the original. They want an additional $300 for that. What would a good K&N system cost? Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks Russel AZ, Buzzman 72, and Mike.

That is pretty much normal for the auto. Go with a Jasper, they hold up alot better than the Ford remans. If you use them hard about 65-70000 miles usually lets them out even with fluid/filter changes. We have 8 F350's at work and at 65,000 they go in for a trans replacement as part of the routine maintenance. It's cheaper to replace them before they fail, rather than pay tow bills and have a crew and trailer broken down on the side of the road. Just the nature of the truck under severe applications.

Over the past 20-odd years, I've worked primarily in Ford dealer parts departments, so I feel I've got SOME qualification to offer a reply. The E4OD transmission used behind the 7.3l Powerstroke diesel is known in Ford dealerships as the "E-4-OH-NO!" because it seems to have a high failure rate, in comparison to the transmissions that came before it. What we found when I worked at a dealership in Buckner, KY, was that the Jasper rebuilt was about the best there is on the market...fewer complaints, even better than the Ford "black-box" units that actually came out of Fred Jones Ford in Oklahoma City. Jasper has identified a lot of the failure-prone areas and made improvements that lengthen the life of these trannys, and I don't think you can go wrong with one of theirs. But Jasper's R&D comes at a price, so be prepared to drop some bucks on one...but with Jasper's 3-year, 75,000-mile warranty, and their reputation on E4OD's, I don't think you can go wrong with that product.

I don't work for Jasper; in fact, some of their products I WOULDN'T recommend! But their reman E4OD is probably the best rebuilt you'll find anywhere, at any price, for this application.
