I have been contacted by some from the UK about selling them a, well, horse. The reason I'm posting this here is that I quite often see adds that say "no overseas buyers" What do I need to watch out for. I'm a little suspiciuos because the guy wants a three year old draft horse stallion for his 7 1/2 year old son. Then he tells me time is important because his son's birthday is coming. What kind of financial arrangement would be safest, or should I just pass. Thanks for allowing this one horsepower question. WJL

Sounds like this guy wants a stallion for his mares not his son , who is 7 1/2. You could send him what he wants in a cold vial heckuva lot cheaper.Mguy.

I think MarkB has hit the nail on the head with the shipping cost and quarantine rules.

While I know people that have imported animals from over seas (Africa) it is a long draw out process. Now if this were a triple crown horse I might under stand but just think about what you said.

This man is buying a horse for a 7 year old. Time is of importance but he wants to have one shipped from over seas and wait weeks for it to go through quarantine. Wouldn't just any old nag do for a 7 year old? Why on earth would you go through this much trouble to get a horse for a 7 year old? But on the other hand if your stock blood line is this good to warrant this kind of hassles I may need to look at it.

I've sold hay overseas before. Put together a few deals sight unseen (and done well). One of my neighbors has also sold cows to South America and several of my customers routinely sell (and ship) horses overseas.

What you need:

1. A lawyer skilled in import/export to handle the transaction

2. A lawyer skilled in import/export

3. Did I mention you need a lawyer? :-)

Get a contract. Most sales involve escrow. If he is legit he will ask for a vet certification. Right now with the exchange rates he may be getting a bargain. Make sure he is paying the freight and the container (you cant just put a pen in the hold of the plane. Sallee Horse Transportation (Lex, KY) is skilled in transatlantic. This should be 'some' horse. The freight will run over $10,000. Also be sure to check on restrictions in particular areas . I didnt think we could ship horses from the US to the UK due to West Nile virus.

kyhayman,
Thanks for the infomation, especially the shipping cost and the West Nile comments. I'll pose these questions and see what answers I get back. If you're interested in our draft horses, check us out at Lupkes.com and take the American Cream draft horse link.

If YOU were buying a horse, and time was of the essence, would you buy one sight unseen on the other side of the ocean from a total stranger?

How much do you suppose it costs to ship a live horse across the Atlantic? (I understand that DEAD horses are routinely shipped to France, but it doesn't sound like the guy wants to eat your horse.)

I don't know about horses, but it's nearly impossible to import dogs into Britain because of strict quarantine laws.

I have to admit, some of these scammers are getting clever. Don't let them waste your time.

Well the only thing that makes me think he may be legit is that this horse is extremely rare, only about 300 alive. Also, they are the only draft horse breed originating in the USA. Finally, they have a palomino look. Trigger on steriods is how I describe them. So the guy might be looking for something really unique. But it's a long shot. I will probably pass on this one.

Not to mention the financial aspect, have you checked with the AG Departments (or equivalent) both here and there, about health requirements... and I'll bet there's a quaranteen period!
