PTO Clutch Suggestion

I am looking for suggestions from you "tinkerers" out there. I need to hook up some kind of clutch on a PTO driven machine I'm working on for a friend. The PTO will be turning a shaft that needs to drive the machine intermittantly without running to the tractor each time. I had a 19 hp Wheel Horse that used a cone clutch off the engine crankshaft that is about what I had in mind. An electric clutch won't do it because we are looking for something that will slip before engaging fully. Hydraulic would be OK as well as mechanical. Anyone out there have a suggestion? Thanks,

Ed K.

I used the differential from an old golf cart to lift the hammer on a post driver I fabricated. I adapted the drive shaft to my pto. Then I used an empty rim on one axle for the lift cable and rigged a disc brake on the other. When I want to raise the hammer (about 400 lbs) I apply the brake to the one and the other then has power. To drop it I release the brake and the hammer falls. The pto is always turning. Is this what you have in mind?

Older Oliver tractors like the 77, 88, etc. had a totally self-contained clutch unit bolted to the rear of the tractor- for the pto. That's why when you find those tractors in a salvage yard, they are usually missing that part. You might also be able to use the hand clutch assembly from a WD Allis. Bit more work to work up a powerline, but the run-in-oil clutch would do what you want.

if it's hooked to a certain tractor: if the tractor uses electric or hydraulic pto control, a remote pto control (by wires or cable) will probably be the most practical.

You could modify the PTO shaft to have some cluth plates out of an old tranny. Use the throw out bearing and linkage and use a foot peddle or hand lever.

Could you rig up a v-belt type clutch. Tighten to belt to engage, let loose to let slip (disengage).
