I am thinking about buying a 8n for use around my home. I will use it for brush hogging and dirt moving and other odd jobs. I am not a tractor guy so I was hoping to find someone who owns one. How does the PTO work? Do I have to drive the tractor to make the PTO work or will it work alone? The one I am looking at currently has a 3/4 bucket on the front so I am all set there. but what about the brush hog. Do I need a special on e or will anyone work. I bought a woods 7 ft back blade, can I use it to move snow. Why should I be concerned as to where the distibutor is . I was told to stay away form the front mounted one and get the side mounted. If anybody has the time I would love to ask more questions. Thanks in advance.

Bill : The other guys gave you great answers, but just as a point of interest, you might want to check out the Ford 9N, 2N, 8N discussion board on this site as a great source for ANYTHING involving the N-series tractors.

The 8N is a nice acreage/yard tractor. It doesn't have live pto, so you have to drive the tractor to make the pto operate. For use with a bushhog install an overrunning clutch so the hog won't push you into a tree or building.
A 7 ft blade should be okay for snow removal, depends on how heavy the blade is, the 8N might get a little light in front with the blade raised.
Side mount versus front mount dist.- The side mount is easier to work on, altho the front mt isn't that bad, take out two bolts and lay the dist. on the bench to change points. With a loader on, it ain't easy to work on any of them. Otherwise, there isn't any difference whether front or side dist. I grew up with these old Fords and while I'm no expert, I do know a few things about them, feel free to e-mail me anytime.

You don't have to drive the tractor for the PTO to work. Just engage the PTO and let out on the clutch if you do not have the tractor in gear the PTO will work and the tractor will remain stationary. But the PTO will stop if the clutch is depressed.

1952 8N would be a side mount dist. If the one you are looking at is a front mount it will be a 1948 to 1950 model. There is no reason to stay away from either if maintained properly. The 8N will not be a live pto or lift. Both work off of main clutch. If you do buy the tractor, put a overrunning coupler on the pto for safety in operating brushog.

Slight correction. Ford changed to the side mount dist. mid year in 1950. Late models were side mount.
