Trailer Spring Problem

I replaced a broken leaf spring on my tandem trailer (3500 lb axles). After the job was completed, I noticed that the other wheel on the same side had raised up off the ground by about 3 inches. The replacement spring has the same number of leafs and dimension as the old spring.
The only thing that I can think of is that the new spring is stiffer that on remaining spring and it is pressing down on the pivot point causing the other spring/wheel to raise up.
Any ideas?

This is probably going against the grain of the other posts and maybe there is some reason you shouldn't do this, but I think you should replace the other spring on the same axle with a spring identical to the one you just replaced.

If you have 2 springs with equal arch, on each axle the trailer should track straight down the road. If it carries one axle when empty, so what? those tires will last a little longer.

If you have 1 spring on the trailer with either greater/lesser spring rate or different arch in it, then the walking tandem equalizer will tilt, drawing the axles a tiny bit closer together on that side. That will try to drag the trailer in a slight curve toward that side. so you'll always be trying to drag the trailer the opposite direction to steer a straight line.

Are the moveable shackles both up from the pivot hanger or is one set up and one set down?

Russel,
The front hanger for the rear spring (the spring that was replaced) is down whereas on the other side of the trailer, that hanger is up. I tried to press the hanger down with a crow bar. I noticed that there is no binding, ie, the bolts are not overtighted.
Maybe as someone suggested, I need to replace the other spring on the same side with a new spring to balance the spring tension.

And don't forget to install greasable shackle bolts and bronze bushings if it came from the factory with plastic bushings.

both the hanger straps, moveable shackle have to be up. You may have to take the front bolt out of the one that is down to get it back in place.

If it is a walking tandem a new spring shouldn't make the other raise up unless you overtightened the bolts and the shackles and leaf springs can't pivot. Also check to besure that the shackles are the same length as the old ones, there are at least 2 different lengths. Let us know!

The old spring has lost some of it's "arch". The new one MIGHT settle in somewhat, after a few loads. A good auto spring shop can re-arch springs to match. They'll most likely recommend that you replace both springs, (or even ALL the springs on the trailer) at the same time. John
