I have been given an old john deer tractor that used to belong to my wife's grandfather. It was bought sometime around 1945. It's a H-40 series. It hasn't been run in about 20 years. It's been setting in the weather so I'am not sure exactly what kind of shape the motor is in. Looks like I'll have to get a flat bed trailer and haul it home. It would be nice if I could get the thing running again. I was told that the motor starts on gas and then you switch it over to kerosene. We just couldn't see the family having the thing hauled off and my wife I decided we would like to restore it. I think the family thinks we're crazy for messing with it but I like the challenge. Does anybody have any tips for getting it running again. Thank abunch

Have heard of H's and 40's, but my experience tells me they are two different animals. Then again I may be incorrect, anybody care to explain this a little more. waas it an experimental model? Wasn't the H built in the Waterloo line and the 40 in the Dubuque line of tractors? Gene Davis

Gene, I made a mistake on the model. I was given an old manuel to the planter thats a H-40 model for H model tractors. I thaught it was the manuel to the tractor. It's very old and brittle.

If it is stuck, I would recomend putting some penetrating oil in the spark plug holes, before you turn it over. if it is loose, heavier oil would be ok. do not turn it over dry!

Steve, The H John Deere is one of the most popular J-D's to collect due to their size and relative rarity. To get started with yours I recommend you drain all the fluids first. Watch to see what they look like-if they are contaminated with water, metal filings or pieces etc. Remove the spark plugs then try turning the engine over by hand. The point I am trying to make is that you need to evaluate the current condition and stabilize things. You do NOT want to do more damage before you know how things sit now. Get that far and then stop back here or on the John Deere forum. There are plenty of folks glad to give you a hand!
Glad to hear of another tractor saved from the scrap heap! Welcome to the club!

Thanks Chris. You know I can just imagine the day her grandfather brought that thing home 60 years ago from the John Deer dealer. It was probally his pride and joy.
