A company called Overseas Procurement Limited contacted us in response to an ad we placed advertising a tractor for sale. The ad said they are based in South Africa and had a client interested in purchasing and that they would arrange for pickup after payment has been recieved by the seller. Has anybody ever had dealings with them? Any advise would be very helpful.

Call the South African consulate in your nearest large city. they will probably be glad to check on the company for you, as they are trying to increase their trade and any bad pulicity puts a black eye on all the legitimate companys there. Check some on the web, and you'll find that there is a strong old tractor community there. There was an article in the Massey Fergusson magazine last fall I think also.

You might want to go the the search box at the top of the page, and type in "scam". I just did, and got 567 "hits".

While it is POSSIBLE the offer you got is legit, it would be worthwile to read some of the posts of what others have gone through.

I agree with Bob. If the money's good, the deal's good. That can be a big IF, however. Just be adamant that no shipping takes place until AFTER the funds are received and verified. Work with your banker on that part. An overseas check may take a long time to clear. Just because you deposit it in your account and your bank shows an increase in your balance, doesn't mean you're out of the woods. Talk to someone in authority at your bank (not just the teller...high school graduate making slightly more than drive-up clerk and Micky-D's), someone like the branch manager, president, etc. Tell them you want to be SURE the funds are good and that you are relying on them to let you know when that can be determined.

As said by others, kill the deal RIGHT NOW if they mention anything about you sending money to them. There's no reason for it in a legitimate deal.

Why mess with any of their money instruments. One scam said I'll send you a check and you send me the money back Western Union. So obviously WU is the way to go. Theirs banks all over the world, start a temporary account at your bank just for this tansaction and tell them to wire it in. You'll be ready to ship when the funds are there. We could offer to buy some of their stuff with them million dollar bills that lady tried to pass at WalMart.

Have had several of these clowns wanting to buy things form Canada, South Africa, etc. I offer to sell it to them if the send a Western Union money wire that I can cash at a local office, and guess what, they do not ever respond to me again, so Western Union must be pretty secure.

From what I have heard, this is a no brainer. If they send the money to you and you take it to the bank and the check is good, what difference does it make if they are communist terrorists. You got your money and they are willing to make any and all arrangements to ship the unit overseas. Yes, there are some scams from Africa but you should know better than to send any of your own money to close a deal for equipment that you are selling. I know a dealer who sells ten to twelve tractors to overseas concerns each year. Just use your head and everything should be OK. Good luck!

It's probably a scam.. They offer to send a check for an enormous amount of money, then they want you to send back the remainder with one of your own checks, but unfortunately, their check is bad, and they clean out your account
