Alright folks, its been in the 40's for almost 3 days now, although it's starting to snow again. Got to get ready to do some painting, Whats a good primer, how do I fill the pitted spots in the cast and do I use the same paint on the engine as I use on the rest of this bugger. I know I'm asking alot but I've never restored a tractor before, just drove 'um. This one's gonna show (once a year at old home days) as well as do some work.

I have been using a RustOleum primer for clean, slightly rusted metal, it is white in color, dries to the touch in a few hours and seems to brush into the pits in castings well. So far I like it. I clean all grease, wire brush by hand, or angle grinder with cup wheel, or wire wheel in electric drill. The drill brushes vary from 7 or 8" dia. to 2 or 3" dia. depending on the surface to be cleaned and the ease of getting into the corners. I think hand brushing gets deeper into the pits as the indiviual wires don't pass over them so fast and have time to get deeper. If sandblasting try and get ALL the sand dust out of everything before painting. I have been using a True Value orange for my finish coat on my AC WD. It seems close to AC orange and I am not after an exact match. It tooseems like good paint, I know some of the two part paints will last better and be tougher, but this is what I am doing.

CH,
I have a small and a large paint gun, you're welcome to borrow! They should spray orange OK, it's close enough to red.

HaHa, Thanks. I think I'm gonna have to wait a couple of months, but I'll take you up on that.

I seem to remember red and yellow make orange when mixed, the correct color should already be in the guns.

I don't think too many guys fill the pitted spots in the cast before painting. Cast is cast and I would say it's better to leave it "as is". Some grinding of rough edges, etc. but the pits, well I'd say leave them. If you fill them you might be in for more than you bargain for. Filling in the pits is "the pits".

CH Let us know what brand it is ,if its a J.D.then get paint from them if you have a dealer near , or you can get N.A.P.A.to mix you up about a gallon if its a larger tractor or about 1/2 gal. on lets say a cub, also you can find some primer thats specially made to put back on where you have cleaned rusty metal. Bondo makes some tubes of filler putty that you can apply that will fill the pit holes in metal. I brushed and sanded on a John Deere hood & grille until I got tired and then I took it to a sandblaster ( they can get to close places where you can't ) good luck on your project!

Yes you can use the same paint on the sheet metal that you use on the case. Most paint manufactures will suggest what primer & reducers to use, some primers will not adhere to some top coat paint. We painted a hood off a Case 1190 the other day with Case paint & Case primer & reducer, the top coat would not stick to the primer. We had to remove it all & after switching the reducer & primer everything went fine. However let me caution you that if using an acrylic enamel paint BE SURE TO USE THE RIGHT REDUCER TO MATCH THE TEMPERATURE THAT YOU ARE PAINTING IN, otherwise you can have all kinds of problems. Hope this helps. Frank at Holz Equipment Service
