Ford 4000 - Like 801?

Is a Ford 4000 tractor that was made in about 1963 about the same as the 801 except for the color. The tractor engine and transmission is sorta turquoise colored with fenders and hood off white color.

The engine is diesel and I believe it is 56 HP. The transmission is a select-o-speed 10 forward and two reverse gears. Power steering and live PTO.

Also, for some unknown reason, the PTO requires the engine speed to be over 800 rpm in order to engage. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Donald

I think those had a pto brake on them and may require a certain engine speed to overcome the brake. What does the manual say? Good luck.

Yeah, the 4000 series up thru 64 is basically the same as the 800's. Styling of the sheet metal and colors is different, and the SOS trans was changed in 62, I believe. They replaced the overrunning clutch in the front of the trans to a direct drive unit, to eliminate the freewheeling gears. With the SOS trans they are about 46 hp, I believe.
Your pto clutch engagement sounds like it could be several things. Could be low oil pressure, a valve adjustment, or a internal leak. Does it shift okay at low rpm's? Warm it up good and try to start out in 6th gear with the inching pedal, engine at idle. Does it want to slip? Run it up into 9th and 10th and ride the brakes at low rpm. Does it slip? There is a oil pressure light on the dash, lh side. Does it come on at idle? The SOS is a good trans IMHO, Most of the problems aren't as serious as they seem.

Seems to shift ok. Not any slippage. The fluid has not been changed in a while, though. I don't believe the oil pressure light is working.

Thanks for the help.
